Home & navigation¶
Everything in Donkit starts from one screen. You either ask for something — and your main assistant takes it — or you describe an agent you want built. The rest of the workspace is one rail on the left that keeps your chats and your agents a click away.
The Home screen¶
Home has a single box in the middle and a switch above it with two modes:
- New chat — ask anything. What you type opens a fresh chat with your main assistant. You can address the first message straight away: click @ in the box (or type @) to pick agents, and with two or more picked choose between a poll and a council — exactly as inside a chat. Below the box you'll find your recent chats.
- New agent — describe who you need ("A nutritionist that reads a photo of my plate and estimates calories and macros") and Donkit starts building that agent. Below the box you'll find the template gallery.
Both modes show rotating example ideas — click one to drop it into the box and edit it before sending, and both let you choose which model should handle the request. When you're describing an agent you can attach files to explain what you mean; for a chat, send the message first and attach files inside the conversation.
Not sure which mode you need
Start with a chat. Your main assistant handles one-off work straight away, and it will suggest building a dedicated agent when it notices you asking for the same kind of job again.
Templates¶
In New agent mode, the gallery underneath shows ready-made agents grouped by area — Sales, Support, Research, Content, Finance, Ops — with a search box for finding one by name. Each card has a cover (a screenshot of the template's interface, or a generated cover if the template has no frontend). Click a template to preview what it does, which tools and skills are included, then Create from template. A template is only a starting point: everything about the agent stays editable afterwards. See Templates.
The navigation rail¶
The rail on the left is the same on every screen:
- Home — back to the two create modes.
- Search — find a chat or an agent (see below).
- Chats — your recent conversations with your main assistant. The section shows the five most recent; Show more opens the rest, and scrolling that open list loads older chats. Hover a row for its menu: Rename or Delete.
- Agent Teams — your agent teams. The heading opens the teams page. The arrow collapses the section, which shows three teams; Show more opens the rest. A row opens that team's chat. New team opens the form to create a team. The page explains how a team works. Choosing the lead opens the list of agents who work behind that lead.
- My agents — the agents you own. The section collapses, and it shows the three most recent; Show more opens the rest. An agent that is still being built shows as Creating agent until it's ready.
- Shared — the agents others shared with you, listed the same way. A shared agent opens inside the workspace; one shared with you for editing opens in the builder. Make a copy is offered on agents shared with you at Can copy or Can edit. See Using an agent.
- New chat and New agent buttons at the top of the Chats and My agents sections.
You can collapse the rail to icons when you want the full width for a chat, and expand it again from the same button. At the bottom sits your account menu — theme, account settings, and, for administrators, the admin area.
On a phone the rail hides behind the menu button in the top bar and slides in over the page.
The Mac app¶
The Mac app uses a window toolbar and a native sidebar. Select Chat, History, or Agents in the sidebar, or pick a recent conversation. Right-click a conversation to rename or delete it. Use the sidebar button in the window toolbar to hide or show the list.
Choose a workspace from the menu in the toolbar when you belong to more than one. Chat actions, including the model picker, files, memory, and canvas, appear in the toolbar when available. The conversation keeps a comfortable reading width as you resize the window. On macOS 15 and later, scrolling up with the mouse or trackpad pauses automatic following of new replies; return to the bottom to follow them again.
Settings, your profile, connections, devices, and the account assistant all open in the main window. Press ⌘ + , to open Settings. Account pages share the same layout and controls; Back returns to the page you came from. Selecting Chat returns to your last conversation, while selecting a recent row opens that exact conversation. Press ⌘N for a new chat, ⌘F to search chat history, or ⌘⇧C to toggle the canvas. In the composer, Return sends your message; Shift + Return and ⌘ + Return insert a new line.
The iPhone app keeps its touch navigation and bottom tab bar.
Search¶
Search opens a single overlay over whatever you're doing. Start typing and it looks through chats and agents at once; the filter chips above the results narrow it to All, Chats, or Agents. Picking a result takes you straight there — a chat opens in the workspace, an agent opens on its own page. Press Esc to close.
